July 7 in the AM. Late that afternoon, Harrison and I saw both adult birds off the nest but no sign of a chick. The next morning, Harrison and the LPC biologist picked up the remains of two eggs and she decided they were attacked by something. Both adult birds were there but no chick was seen. On Sat. July10, Bruce Hatch called and said there was a dead chick floating in the cove. We retrieved it, put it in the freezer and the LPC people picked it up. Because there were the remains of two eggs, I guess there could be another dead chick, but probably, the chick that was in our freezer is the one in these pictures. Guess we'll never know what happened but we do have a picture to prove we're not dreaming. 7/7 Rick Blank reported a confirmed sighting of the North (THORNE) nest hatching yesterday and again today; One chick & 2 parents in the water! Please pass the word to anyone you can to observe their territory and protect the family; their territory extends from Scribner point to the S. Conway beach club, however they probably will be closer to the islands for the near term until the chick is a little older.
